Museveni speaks out on the 'senseless killing' of Abiriga

Ugandas President Kaguta Museveni has issued a statement after one of his prominent party stalwarts Ibrahim Abiriga.

The president, in his first reaction, has called the assassination of the legislator "senseless killing".

Museveni says he has "tasked security agencies to expeditiously find these killers".

He adds that the nation will be updated son about the details of Abiriga's assassination.

Eyewitnesses say the 62-year-old Member of Parliament and his bodyguard were killed by two masked assailants who were riding a boda boda.

The head of state has urged the general public to be vigilant and report any suspicion promptly to the police.

Museveni has reiterated that the government is still committed to installing surveillance equipment to help in identifying criminals.

NRM Reaction

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has issued a bold statement in the wake of the sudden assassination of party member Ibrahim Abiriga.

The party says Abirigahas been "a staunch member of NRM whose loyalty to the party was well  known to all concerned".

NRM Secretary General has described the unfortunate incident as a "big robbery to the party" and "we are robbed of a loyal cadre".
