Museveni congratulates Xi Jinping upon his reelection as president without term limits
President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Xi Jinping after he was reelected as Chinese president with no limit on the number of terms he can serve.
Xi Jinping was unanimously approved by China’s legislature together with his close ally Wang Qishan as vice-president.
President Museveni, 73, Uganda’s president since 1986, congratulated the two saying his government looks forward to continue strengthening its diplomatic and economic ties with the Chinese government.
China is Uganda’s second-largest trading partner.
“Congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping & Prime Minister Li Keqiang upon their election to a second term in office. I also congratulate Wang Qishan, the new Vice President. Uganda looks to continue strengthening its diplomatic and economic ties with China,” President Museveni said.
The reelection of Xi Jinping as president for without term limits comes at a time when President Museveni and his government are being criticized for controversially amending the constitution to lift the cap on the presidential age limit.
The amendment allows him to contest again in 2021.
The move was seen by opposition as President Museveni’s greedy way of clinging to power.
