The health ministry has been given an ultimatum of one week to lay down strategies to address the ban on veils for Muslim nurses and midwives.
Muslim nurses and midwives in government health institutions were reportedly banned from wearing the veil while on duty.
In a statement seen by Pulselive.ug, the Executive Director of Muslim Peace Building Network Uganda, Mutyaba Mustafa, expresses frustration in the ministry’s move to ban Muslim medics from veiling saying it denies them the freedom of expressing their religion.
Mutyaba says the move to ban the Muslim medics from veiling creates a difference in treatment and puts Muslim medics at a disadvantage in their respective workplaces.
“I was disturbed to learn that the Muslim nurses and midwives are denied freedom of expressing their religious right of veiling while on duty,” Mutyaba said, adding, “This has a difference of treatment and has put them at a disadvantage in the work place since it affects their wellbeing.”
Mutyaba warns of consequences if the ministry of health doesn’t formally communicate how they are going to address the issue raised.
He warns of possible countrywide industrial action and demonstrations.
