Could this solve the rampant demonstrations and protests against the increase of tuition by the Makerere University management? Hopefully.
Uganda's oldest university students' leadership has approved the proposal by management to increase tuition by 15%.
The agreement comes after months of negotiations which were prompted by protests over ridiculous tuition increments by management.
Students' leadership negotiated with the management to reduce the fees from earlier proposed percentages of 49% and 91% on selected programs.
"There should be a uniform and moderate 15% increase in tuition across all programs effective of 2018/19 for the next 5 years. This, however, means that the student who joins the university given the similar fees structure that has 15% factored in, shall continue to pay the similar amount," part of the statement issued by the chairperson Student's Committee Polly Bandola read.
The increment will take effect from the next academic year of 2018/19 and will not affect the continuing students.
In April, university management suspended increments on tuition fees for selected programs pending consultation with the students' leadership
