LC elections will be top of the agenda as Parliament resumes today
This follows a week after the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, adjourned discussions about the matter.
The Speaker demanded that the government present a firm position on the Local Council I and II elections because the tenure ended on July 10th.
The Parliament Directorate of Communication and Public Affairs, which maintains the House's official Twitter feed, signalled the resumption of plenary even before the order paper was released.
"The House #PlenaryUg resumes tomorrow [today], Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 10 a.m.," a statement from Parliament's Twitter account read.
Speaker Among adjourned the House just over an hour after it convened last week. She had previously requested that the government prepare and present specific decisions that would inform its future decisions on the topic.
Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka appeared before the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, where he reported the Cabinet's decision, announcing that the LC I and II votes would be postponed for another six months.
Kiryowa further stated that the Cabinet had agreed to extend the administration's tenure in the aforementioned positions because organising for the same polls would take at least three months, and roughly one month has already passed.
Kiryowa also said that the specifics would be included in Statutory Instrument No. 63 of 2003, the Local Government (Amendment of the Third Schedule Instrument), which the Minister of Local Government will table.
According to today's Order Paper, the House will convene at 10 a.m., with the topic concerning LCI elections listed as item number 4.
