Two Ugandan movies Kyenvu & Forbidden scooped awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival.
'Forbidden' won the Best East African Feature Film award and 'Kyenvu' won Best African Festivals award.
Kyenvu, a short film directed and produced by Kemiyondo Coutinho, pivots around "a playful, authentic female character whose life is forever altered because of her choice of dress".
Forbidden, directed by Kizito Saviour Samuel, addresses human rights abuse, negligence and HIV related issues.
The prestigious annual film festival took place at various venues in and around Stone Town, Zanzibar from July 7th to July 15 2018.
This year, there was a record number of over 4000 film submissions across the various entry platform from countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda South Africa, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Western Sahara, Niger, Iran, The United States, France, Ghana, Belgium, Tunisia, Swaziland, India, United Kingdom and many more.
Ugandan filmmakers submitted 55 films for the film competition.
