'Kidnapped woman' found preparing dinner for boyfriend

Police are currently holding a 27-year-old woman for faking her own kidnap.

Najjm Gonza is under custody in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb, for demanding a ransom from her parents.

The food vendor at Mbiiko in Jinja District told authorities that the move was intended to help her raise capital to start own business.

The 27-year-old demanded for UGX6million ransom, pressuring her parents to send the money before she is killed by the kidnappers.

Her family alerted the police and traced the phone calls -- which revealed her boyfriend's details -- who led detectives to Ms. Gonza.

She was arrested from her boyfriend's home in Kawempe where she was found preparing supper for two, according to a statement from police.

Authorities say her worried mother is undergoing treatment at Jinja Hospital after collapsing following the news of her tricky daughter.

Gonza has been charged with demanding money by menaces and will be arraigned in court soon.

A preliminary police report released on Wednesday by indicates that in last four months, 42 cases of kidnap have been reported and investigated -- 20 were self kidnap.
