Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has publicly praised firebrand preacher Isaac Rwomushana, adding fresh attention to a pastor whose teachings have sparked debate across Uganda.
Mayiga said he had followed Rwomushana’s sermons and agreed with his views on prayer, especially his criticism of long prayer sessions.
“Recently I saw a pastor named Isaac Rwomushana who nowadays has a lot of people’s attention. I saw him telling born-again Christians to stop praying endlessly. I loved it. Why do you pray endlessly?,” Mayiga said
“God does not need you to talk to him for two hours about issues that have no end. They say He knew you before you were born. Now here you are praying for two hours because you want to pass exams. Doesn’t God know that you need to pass?” Mayiga said.
He added: “I talk to God often, but only briefly to thank him and I go to sleep. If I am about to take on a challenging task I call upon him to be beside me and he will not let me go. You do not need to shout at him or pray for two hours. God’s not deaf.”
Rwomushana has recently gained widespread attention on social media, quickly building a following due to his unconventional preaching style.
His messages often challenge traditional born-again teachings, attracting support from audiences who feel disconnected from mainstream church practices.
He discourages practices such as excessive praying, constant tithing and reliance solely on divine intervention.
Instead, he urges followers to focus on hard work, financial stability and strengthening family relationships before prioritising church commitments.
However, his teachings have drawn sharp criticism from many born-again pastors, who argue that his message contradicts core Christian beliefs. Some have described his preaching as misleading and not guided by the Spirit of God.
