Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has suspended 23 students after finding them guilty of "coupling and having sex on campus", according to university authorities.
The 23 students, including finalists, were suspended for one year after a thorough investigation by the Disciplinary Sub-Committee which based its decision on the oral and written submissions made.
Students who were also found guilty of theft, consumption of alcohol, drug abuse, pregnancy and violence, were also suspended from the 30-year-old university.
Suspended students were given a one-week deadline to appeal against their suspension before the committee sits again to make final decision.
The University Coordinator on Monday said this will act as a strong warning to other students and the "university will not hesitate to expel students who violate the rules and regulations".
The Islamic founded university thrives to be an "academic and cultural institution based on Islam and love" by producing "skilled and ethical" individuals.
