Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has gotten a reprieve after a court allowed him to post a surety instead of his Ksh15 million cash bail.

Through his lawyers, Waititu pleaded with the court to substitute his cash bail of Ksh15 million with a surety of a similar amount.

He revealed to the court that the financial burden was weighing him down and he could no longer meet daily obligations.

The court allowed the Kiambu Governor to be refunded the Ksh15 million cash that he had deposited but ordered him to post a surety.

Tender scam case

In July, Waititu was slapped with the Ksh15 million cash bail in a case involving a Ksh588m tender scam.

Together with employees of the Kiambu County, Waititu was barred from setting foot in Kiambu County offices, for the period of the case.

The governor and his wife Susan were arrested after surrendering themselves to EACC detectives over allegations of tender irregularities for the upgrading of roads worth Ksh588m and embezzlement of public funds.

The two are facing three charges of conflict of interest and two of dealing with suspect property.
