Health ministry suspends Hepatitis B vaccination camps amid fake vaccine scare
Ministry of Health has suspended some privately-owned Hepatitis B vaccination camps following reports of falsified Hepatitis B vaccines in the market.
The health ministry says eight health facilities were found to be in possession of the falsified Hepatitis B vaccines.
The eight health facilities include Mbarara Community Hospital, Divine mercy, Mayanja Memorial, Family Doctors clinic Ntungamo, Mbarara City clinic, UMC Hospital Bukoto, Malcolm Health care Kisaasi, and Kampala Medical Chambers Buganda Road.
All the falsified vaccines have been quarantined as investigations continue.
‘Falsified vaccine’ means the vaccine could be a genuine but someone tampered with the label to make money, according to the chairperson of National Drug Authority Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo.
“Falsified means that it could be a genuine vaccine but somebody has tampered with the label because they want to make money. The moment you tamper with the label, it becomes falsified,” he said.
Ministry of Health urged general public is encouraged to receive Hepatitis B vaccination from only the accredited private facilities which include: Nsambya Hospital, Kibuli Hospital, Mengo Hospital, Rubaga Hospital, International Hospital Kampala (IHK), Norvik Hospital, Case Hospital and Nakasero Hospital.
The prevalence of Hepatitis B infection among adults in Uganda stands at 4.3% (5.6% among men and 3.1% among women), according to the Uganda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment Survey (UPHIA).
