Ofwono Opondo, the government spokesperson, claims Bobi Wine's lawyers are "trying to get him off the hook by employing diversionary tactics in raising the tantalizing, although unproven, allegations of torture".

The 36-year-old Ugandan legislator, who was allegedly tortured by Ugandan soldiers mid-August, is expected to give an update of his condition in Washington DC today at 5 PM EAT.

Opondo says Bobi Wine should "quickly return to Uganda" if indeed he was "tortured or injected with unknown substances" and raise the issue before courts of law.

"Uganda state doesn't use assassination against its opponent or even enemies. Uganda is a law-abiding country," Opondo says.

He adds: "I don't think Mr Amsterdam, a lawyer, is any more competent in analyzing a medical condition of a person.

"We strongly reject Mr Amsterdam's reference of Uganda government as a 'criminal enterprise' because Uganda is governed in accordance with our own democratic Constitution, laws and rules, as well as respect to recognised international standards".
