According to Sunday Vision, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martin Okoth Ochola, has ordered a probe into the matter.
There are fears that the delicate information could have landed in the wrong hands.
It is alleged that the fraud is linked to the impending promotion of police officers in the Force. Police has over 55,000 officers, including covert personnel known as spies.
According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, the key suspect has been identified as Ronald Musse.
Enanga said Musse had in the past weeks telephoned several police officers asking for money so that they appear on the promotions list.
He added that Musse would introduce himself as Senior Superintendent of Police assigned to the Force’s Directorate of Human Resource. He also used mobile number 0761987638 to telephone police officers.
“We are seriously investigating Musse. We have learnt that he has been massacreding as an officer working with the Force’s Human Resources Director. Police ranks can not be sold,” he said, adding that all police officers have been asked to comb all their areas of deployment to fork out Musse.
Sunday Vision reported that preliminary investigations indicate that the fraudsters are using the data to extort from several officers lined up for promotion and retirement.
About 20,000 police officers, according to Police sources, are lined up for promotion. Besides these, 1000 personnel are also lined for retirement. These include; those who deserted, died, retired, dismissed and resigned.
