Former minister lands Pakistan envoy job after fake "embassy" alert

Pakistans President Mamnoon Hussain, 77, has appointed Ugandas former minister Rukia Nakadama as the new Honorary Consul of Pakistan in Uganda.

The appointment comes after almost a month of controversy surrounding the Pakistani consulate in Kampala.

Ms. Nakadama served as the State Minister for Gender and Culture.

Last month, the Pakistani authorities at the High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, accused singer Angella Katatumba of running a fake consulate.

She is the daughter to the former Pakistani Consul Honorary Consul to Uganda Boney Katatumba, who died a year ago.

In a statement, the authorities said Ms. Katatumba "has no legal authority at all".

The singer, in a response, said Nairobi office "doesn't have the say to open or close a consulate", adding that "the president of Pakistan who opened it, will close it".

She also accused Pakistani authorities in Kenya of witch hunt because she is not Muslim.

The Pakistani consulate in Uganda was housed in one of Katatumba's premises in Muyenga.

Ms. Katatumba has advised the former minister to find herself a new office space saying "the office is now closed" and she is starting on other businesses.

She argues that consulates are not funded by foreign governments and that is why "prominent and rich enough to handle their own matters".
