Dr Besigye said, as school’s open, teachers’ wages should be raised and schools must be given financial support since the lockdown has left them teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.
He also demanded that the government address the crisis in the health sector that has witnessed medical personnel on strike since early November.
"We demand urgent interventions. We need a special fund to help schools reopen in 2022 to provide decent education services without compelling parents to pay lots of money. Money must be put in place to support schools to reopen," said Dr. Besigye.
Besigye was speaking at an end of year press conference in Kampala when he added that his pressure group, the PFT, will mobilize activists and the people of Uganda to cause action if the government does not heed their call.
"It's increasingly clear that many private schools were left to collapse under the burden imposed by lockdowns and many teachers have abandoned the profession and the impact of this on the whole education system is clearly very staggering," Dr. Besigye intoned.
On the just concluded Kayunga district LC Five chairperson by-election in which saw Mr. Andrew Muwonge of the National Resistance Movement party was declared winner, Dr. Besigye dismissed elections in Uganda as a sham.
“Repression and violence by State actors has been intensifying to muzzle the highly discontened population,” he declared.
“We’re going to accelerate our programs aimed at the high preparedness of all Red Card activists to coordinate and guide the actions that will be necessary from the end of the first week of January. Let’s all be ready to push back this chronic injustice,” Dr. Besigye concluded.
