A police officer attached to Sukari Police Booth in Namakwekwe Ward in Mbale has been arrested for allegedly raping a suspect in custody.
Joel Magombe, 37, allegedly raped a woman whom he reportedly took to his home instead of transferring her to the district’s central police station.
Elgon region spokesperson Suwed Mansur confirmed the arrest of the police officer and said he is currently being detained at Mbale Central Police Station.
"The suspect has been arrested and currently detained at Mbale Central Police Station," Manshur said.
Mansur also said medication examination results proved positive sexual intercourse but they couldn’t prove whether it was rape at press time.
"The medical examination proved that they had sexual intercourse, though we could not confirm whether it was rape," he said.
The woman who was allegedly raped had been arrested over failure to clear a loan she had acquired from a local savings cooperative.
