Pop superstar Britney Spears once sent social media into a frenzy after jokingly claiming she had broken Usain Bolt's long-standing 100-meter world record.
Back in 2020, the "Toxic" singer, now 43, took to Instagram to share a supposed new athletic achievement. While Bolt, an eight-time Olympic gold medalist, holds the official world record of 9.58 seconds, set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships, Spears announced she had run the distance in an astonishing 5.97 seconds.
"Ran my first 5!!!!" she wrote in the now-famous post. "Getting over your fear of pushing it in the beginning is key... Once I did that I hit 5!!!!! Usually I run 6 or 7... My first try was 9 .... and now I did it whoop !!!!! 100 meter dash."
The claim quickly went viral, sparking widespread amusement and even inspiring a fan-made simulation of the incredible feat. The buzz prompted Spears to clarify her statement shortly after.
"PS …. obviously I was joking about running the 100 meter dash in 5.97 seconds …. the world record is held by Usain Bolt which is 9.58 seconds," she explained, before cheekily adding, "But you better believe I'm coming for the world record."
More recently, the eight-time Grammy winner has been in the news for different reasons, publicly refuting allegations made by her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, in his upcoming book. Federline's claims, serialized by the New York Times, include unsettling anecdotes about their past marriage and the custody of their two sons.
In response to what she described as "constant gaslighting," Spears, who was released from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021, stated that the claims were "extremely hurtful and exhausting." She also expressed regret over the strained relationship with her sons, noting that she has been leading a "sacred and private life" since her conservatorship ended.
