Charges against journalists accused of disturbing the peace of president dropped

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mike Chibita has withdrawn charges against eight journalists and directors of the Red Pepper Publications.

They were arrested on November 21, 2017 after police raided their offices in Namanve, along Jinja Road.

The charges were dropped after the state lost interest in the case according to the letter from the DPP’s office.

“This is to inform court that the DPP has decided to discontinue proceeding,” part of the letter from the DPP’s office read.

Grade One Magistrate Samuel Kagoda terminated the charges and discharged the accused people.

Long-way to freedom

The 8 journalists and directors were arrested on November 21, 2017, after police raided their offices in Namanve

They were arraigned before Buganda Road a week later and then remanded to Luzira Prisons.

After another week of detention in Luzira Prisons, they were transfered to Nalufenya Police Station in Jinja.

The group was granted bail after a month in detention before meeting President Museveni on January 23rd.

He pardoned them and cautioned them against reckless reporting and allowed them to resume publication.
