"Beat your wife" MP bows to pressure and apologizes

Bugangaizi East Hon. Onesmus Twinamatsiko has apologized for his reckless and outrageous beat your wife statement.

Twinamatsiko said men should beat their wives as a way of discipling them.

"As a man, you need to discipline your wife...touch her a bit, tackle her and beat her to streamline her,” he said.

Appearing before the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Onesmus Twinamatsiko submitted his apology to the Speaker saying he has the highest respect for the dignity of women.

"For avoidance of doubt, may I at the onset affirm my highest respect for the dignity of women and my unwavering faith in the inviolability of women. I actually detest all forms of violence against women," he said.

He told the August House that he never meant to condone violence against women in the viral video.

"Kindly accept my sincere and unreserved apologies Honorable Members and the general Public and more particularly, the women. This apology is unconditional...while I never meant to condone violence against women, it is still not my intention to further strain the matter by making unnecessary justifications"

"I celebrate women, who are the pillars of the our society and the custodians of our national cohesion and togetherness. I seek understanding and I earnestly pray that you and all members of the public, accept my sincere apology. I reiterate my unshakeable faith in the dignity of women," Onesmus said.

Hon. Twinamatsiko also submitted to withdraw the outrageous statement that prompted the Speaker of Parliament to order for an immediate investigation.

"Mr. Speaker, with the greatest humility, I take this opportunity to withdraw altogether the unfortunate statement," he submitted

People on social media and other local leaders called for Hon. Twinamatsiko’s resignation condemning his outrageous act.
