Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has called on new signing Matheus Cunha to build on his promising start, stating that the £62 million forward still has significant room for improvement.
Cunha became United's first major acquisition of the summer when the club activated his release clause at Wolves. The Brazilian international arrived at Old Trafford on the back of a standout season at Molineux, where he tallied 15 goals and six assists in 33 Premier League appearances.
While yet to score for his new team, Cunha delivered his most impressive performance to date in United's recent stunning victory over Liverpool at Anfield. However, Amorim has urged the forward not to become complacent, challenging him to produce that level of quality consistently.
"He brings something that is hard for us to point at; it’s not just the ability and the talent," Amorim told MUTV. "He has something that he is really comfortable playing in this kind of environment. He can take our team forward."
Despite the praise, the manager was quick to highlight areas for development. "He needs to improve a lot of things, especially defending, but he has something special and he is a really important player for us," Amorim added. "He can play in different positions, so I expect the same in the next game because, in our club, it’s really important to show it every week."
Cunha is expected to feature in the starting lineup for United's upcoming match against Brighton on Saturday, as Amorim's side aims to secure a third consecutive league victory.
