Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal have reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign striker Darwin Núñez, sources have confirmed.
Núñez, who arrived at Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for an initial fee of £64 million ($85.5m), has been the subject of transfer speculation for some time. Despite scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances over three seasons, his role in the team diminished last season, even as Liverpool secured the Premier League title.
The Uruguayan forward was previously linked with a move away from the club in January, having reportedly urged Liverpool to consider serious offers from Saudi Arabia. Sources indicate that Núñez reiterated his desire for a transfer this summer, leading to the current agreement.
Al Hilal has now reportedly settled on a €53 million ($62m) deal to bring the striker to the Saudi Pro League. This development follows earlier interest from Italian clubs, including a rejected bid from Serie A champions Napoli earlier in the transfer window.
Liverpool reportedly found Napoli's valuation of Núñez to be inadequate. Furthermore, the proposed payment structure would have delayed the transfer funds until the summer of 2026, with payments spread over a five-year period.
Following the finalization of Núñez's departure, Liverpool is expected to re-enter the market for a new attacking player. However, the club will only pursue a transfer if a suitable candidate becomes available, specifically targeting a player capable of enhancing their starting lineup.
