7 peanut butter brands recalled over high levels of toxins
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has suspended seven peanut butter company permits for stocking substandard products.
Kebs also recalled their peanut butter brands in the market after tests confirmed high levels of aflatoxin than the maximum limit allowed.
The products include True nuts manufactured by Truenutz Kenya, Fressy manufactured by Fressy Food Company Limited and Supa meal manufactured by Supacosm Products Limited.
Others are Nuteez manufactured by Jetlak Foods Limited, Sue’s manufactured by Nature’s Way Health, Zesta manufactured by Trufoods Limited and Nutty by nature manufactured by Target Distributors.
Levels of aflatoxin Â
“The suspension follows test results undertaken by KEBS which confirm that their levels of aflatoxin are higher than the maximum limit allowed by the Standard," a statement from Kebs read.
The companies were instructed to discontinue and recall all substandard products as well as institute corrective actions.
In January this year, the Ministry of Health had recalled peanut butter brand ‘Nuteez’ after tests confirmed a contaminated batch in Nandi County.
KEBS said Nuteez had been allowed back onto the shelves following an inspection of all its facilities to ensure measures were put in place so products meet standards.
