A 50-year-old man is currently being detained by police in Hoima after faking his own kidnap to extort money from his wife.
The devious husband allegedly phoned his wife claiming that he had been kidnapped by criminals who wanted a ransom of UGX2 million, according to Albertine regional police spokesperson Julius Hakiza.
The money was later wired to his mobile money by his terrified wife after collecting money within her friends and family.
Police have preferred charges of obtaining money by false pretense against him.
Kidnap and murder cases are on the rise in Uganda, with the latest being the murder of a 28-year-old Susan Magara whose body was dumped in Kigo.
How he got arrested:
- After wiring the money through to his mobile money, detectives continued to manhunt the 'kidnapped 50-year-old man.
- Detectives say he would regularly move between Hoima & Kyankwanzi district using a boda boda
- He was later tracked and found feasting with his friends in celebration of his release by the kidnappers.
- He was found with UGX1.5m, believed to have been part of the UGX2m ransom demanded by the purported kidnappers
