22 girls seek refuge in a school after escaping FGM

Twenty-two girls in Kuria East, Migori County are seeking refuge at Taranyanga Primary Boarding School after escaping female genital mutilation.

According to a local daily, Kuria East community-based organization, GOSESO chairperson Susan Mutinde stated that the 22 girls were now in safe hands.

She however pointed out that feeding the girls and providing them with other basic needs like clothes was a challenge.

She appealed to the government through the office of gender to support the girls at the rescue camp.

The GOSESO chairperson pleaded leaders to help in the fight against the outlawed cultural practice.

During the Jamhuri day celebrations, Migori County Commissioner Joseph Rotich, revealed security officers were prepared to deal with individuals practicing female circumcision.
