Three shortlisted for EU Human Rights Award in Uganda

The European Union and the Norwegian Embassy in Uganda have announced the three finalists for the prestigious EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2024. The award honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to human rights in Uganda over the past year.

2024 EU HRDAward Finalists: Jesca Ruth Ataa, Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo and Doreen Kyazze

Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a prominent Ugandan academic and social commentator, is recognized for his use of social media to raise awareness and demand accountability for public service issues. Despite facing threats for his outspokenness, Dr. Ssentongo continues to engage in public discourse to promote good governance.

Jesca Ruth Ataa, a human rights defender from Kotido, is nominated for her leadership of the Nakere Rural Women Activists (NARWOA) organization. NARWOA tackles critical issues faced by women in Uganda, including domestic violence, political instability, and economic empowerment. Through NARWOA's programs, Ms. Ataa has directly impacted the lives of over 15,000 women and 250,000 children.

Doreen Kyazze, a lawyer and activist, is recognized for her tireless fight against the death penalty and her dedication to the rights of women in Ugandan detention facilities. Ms. Kyazze's legal expertise and advocacy have extended beyond Uganda's borders, as she has also championed progressive legal reforms across Africa.

The winner of the 2024 EU Human Rights Defenders Award will be announced at a ceremony in Kampala on May 2nd, hosted by the Embassy of Denmark. All three finalists are commended for their unwavering commitment to human rights advancement in Uganda.
