The suspect is Doreen Atwongeirwe, a resident of Katete and lecturer at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara City South.

She is alleged to have poured a jug of boiling water on 16-year-old Anita Kansiime, who was working as her maid.

The incident happened last week.

Kansiime, who hails from Ruhaama in Ntungamo says Atwongeirwe had been mistreating her, often beating her up whenever she was unhappy with her work.

On the fateful day, Kansiime says her boss came back home in the evening and found her bathing her children.

She started quarreling about why the toddlers were being bathed late in the night.

I had just finished bathing the first child and had hot water in the jug ready to start on the second one,” she recounted, adding that at that moment, Atwongeirwe picked up the jug of hot water and poured it on her.

She added that the woman immediately threw her outside of the gate and that neighbours came to her rescue, rushing her to a clinic in Katete.

Kansiime is currently nursing severe burn wounds at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

One of her relatives, Norah Aine says the family has been struggling with the hospital costs and pleaded with well-wishers to come to their aid.

Police in the area confirmed the ongoing investigations, but dismissed some of Kansiime’s claims.

The Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said the victim “accidentally poured the hot water on herself.”

The boss has been cooperating with the police and she is the one paying the hospital bills,” added the police mouthpiece.

However, Robert Kanusu, the area Deputy Resident District Commissioner said Atwongeirwe will soon be arraigned in courts of law.

The file was sent to the Resident State Attorney who delayed in processing it,” Kanusu said.

The suspect had to be released on bond, but when the file is ready, she will be rearrested and taken to court as per the advice of the state attorney.”
