PHOTOS: Protesters arrested, police speak out on March to Parliament

A number of protesters who woke up to participate in the March to Parliament campaign against corruption have been detained by security agencies.

Despite several warnings from security agencies and President Yoweri Museveni himself, some protesters were motivated to champion their fight against corruption, with some calling for the resignation of Speaker of Parliament Anitah Among, who has been implicated in significant corruption scandals.

Below are some key events that have occurred since morning:

  • A website named Missingpersonsug.org has been launched, allowing anyone to report an arrested person for follow-up.
  • Security agencies have been deployed at several points around the city to prevent violence.
  • Former Makerere University Guild President Papa Were has been arrested.
  • Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said, "I have moved around KMP today and the situation is normal and calm. People are going on with their lawful duties and businesses without any problem. Although intelligence agencies are still indicating intended disobedience plans by some youths, security agencies have deployed to deter them."
  • Police have arrested protesters around the parliament.
  • Security agencies are patrolling the city with vans, popularly known as drones, with their number plates covered. These were seen around Railway Grounds in Kampala.
  • Security has been intensified around Busega Roundabout towards Masaka Road as youths attempt the July 23rd march to Parliament for anti-graft protests.
  • Security officers were seen patrolling inside the Garden City Mall parking area.
