Isma Olaxes murder: Nakawa leadership pushes for mandatory CCTV surveillance

Leaders in Nakawa Division are pushing for implementation of mandatory installation of CCTV cameras on all new houses in Kampala.

Nakawa Division RCC Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha says there was no CCTV cameras around the murder scene of Ismah Olaxes

The move follows the shooting to death of outspoken blogger Isma Olaxes alias Jajja Iculi, at his home in Kyanja, Central Zone in Nakawa.

Isma was murdered at around 9:20pm on Saturday, May 6th, 2023, as he entered his home by a lone gunman.

His murder followed that of Minister of State for Labor Charles Engola, who was shot dead by his bodyguard on Tuesday, May 2nd in the same locality.

Nakawa Division Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha says the division leadership will be pushing a proposal through the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to increase CCTV surveillance across the whole city.

“In this campaign, we are calling on you the media to support us; we want KCCA’s political and technical wings to come up with a policy that if you are building a house in Kampala, it must have a CCTV camera,” Kamugisha told the press.

Kamuguisha says, having cameras on all residential and private buildings would go a long way in helping police to investigate such heinous murders and other crimes.

“These cameras are helpful. In countries like the UK, every home has a camera and you find that even if there is any sort of fault in the government cameras, the private cameras come in and complement,” he said.

“We need to push this to ensure that when you're seeking a construction plan, that plan entails CCTV surveillance and if it's not included, we are not giving you a plan. You can see the lapse is happening. In this place (murder scene) there is no single camera.”

According to reports, Police arrested two people, to help with the investigations into Isma’s murder.

His body was laid to rest on Sunday, May 7th at his ancestral home in Nkokonjeru.
