PLU Crisis: Gashumba summoned for disciplinary action for insulting Gen Muhoozi

The leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) is embroiled in a clash that observers fear could threaten its integrity.

Cracks within the pressure group led by Gen Muhoozi Kaineruba were laid bare in the past few days as one of its leaders, Frank Gashumba accused his colleagues of a witch-hunt.

Gashumba, who serves as PLU's Vice Chairman Central region was early this week summoned for a disciplinary hearing over a social media post that was deemed offensive to Gen Muhoozi.

According to the summons letter issued by Hon Michael Mawanda, the PLU’s disciplinary committee chairman, Gashumba was expected to appear for the hearing, today, Wednesday at 3 pm.

Mawanda claims Gashumba posted an offensive comment on X that appeared to implicate Gen Muhoozi in the ongoing crime spree and insecurity in Kampala and other parts of the country.

I am writing to inform you that you are required to attend a disciplinary hearing at 15 hours on Wednesday 29th May 2024 at the PLU Secretariat. The purpose of the hearing is to consider an allegation of misconduct against you,” the summons reads in part.

Gashumba in the said post made a general observation about the criminality in the country, questioning the ability of the UPDF and Police to combat it.

To all heads of security agencies; UPDF, Uganda Police, Internal Security Organisation, Military Police, Chieftaincy of military intelligence, Special Forces Command and all sister agencies; If you cannot protect Ugandans with their properties, simply resign,” he wrote.

Every day we see social media clips of Ugandans being assaulted, robbed and even murdered by gangs on the streets of Kampala and several testimonial reports and recordings on different categories of young females, and males, traumatized by the thuggery even in broad daylight.”

We as Ugandans, we are wondering why they pay you people salaries. You are paid to protect lives and properties. If these gangs have overpowered you, you don't qualify to wear our uniforms.

Gashumba accompanied his post with pictures of Gen Muhoozi and Abbas Byakagaba, who had just been appointed the Inspector General of Police.

Following his summons, however, Gashumba issued a scathing statement, dismissing the disciplinary hearing as “biased”

I have no confidence in the disciplinary committee because going by all your biased comments on our PLU CEC WhatsApp group, you have already turned yourselves into the complainants, the prosecutors, the judge, and the executioner,” he wrote.

I therefore expect no justice from biased people like you and those under your influence. In fact I am in this solely because of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, otherwise, I am aware that you and Daudi Kabanda have tons and tons of hatred against me.”

By publication of this story, I was not yet confirmed if Gashumba attended the hearing.
