Singer Chris Evans spends night in jail; here’s why

Police in Sembabule district on Sunday June 4th, arrested and detained singer Christopher Evans Kaweesi, popularly known as Chris Evans.

The “Wamponya” singer was apprehended at a music show according to multiple reports, and detained at Sembable Central Police Station where he spent the night.

He was only released the following day (Monday) in the afternoon hours on Police bond. In a social media video, he was seen walking out of the police station surrounded by a handful of supporters.

At the show, it was reported that the police were hunting for another singer, Hassan Ndugga of the “Kampala Agaanye" fame; but ended up apprehending Evans in his stead.

Ndugga was accused of taking money from an organizer for an earlier show and failing to show up.

When Police turned up, they rounded up Evans while Ndugga vanished in the dark of the night.

Shortly after his release, Evans described the police’s actions as unprofessional.

He also accused the officers of assaulting and injuring some of the members of his team in the process. He however, thanked his fans and those who helped secure his freedom.

The 36 year old is one of the renowned Ugandan songwriter, vocalist, recording and performing artiste. He broke onto the music scene in 2009.
