When Azawi ‘directed’ Carol Nantongo’s recording session

Azawi’s writing prowess saw her work with some household names even before she thought about becoming a singer.

Carol Nantongo and Azawi

One day Azawi, real name Priscilla Zawedde, hit up Judas, Carol Nantongo’s manager, via Facebook.

Judas responded to the message and hired her to write a song for Carol.

After writing the song, Judas invited her to studio to direct Nantongo during the recording session.

In an interview, Azawi said she had never directed anyone before, so all she did was say yes to whatever Nantongo was doing. After all, Nantongo had already been in studio before and came out with well-received ballads.

Judas paid Azawi Shs500k for the song but it was never released.

She said she was broke at the time and used the money to buy among others jeans, a watch, shoes, gave some to her mother and she used the balance as upkeep.

Real name Priscilla Zawedde, Azawi was born on February 2, 1996, to Samuel Walusimbi and Mary

Nakamatte. She lost her father when she was in S.4 and grew up in Nakulabye.

She went to Buganda Road Primary School and Mother Kevin Primary School in Mukono, Lubiri S.S., St. Henry’s College in Ggangu, London College in Nansana, Kasubi S.S. and St. Janani Luwum S.S., before joining Makerere University to earn a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Her music career started in P.5 when she joined Kika Dance Troupe which had split from Ndele Troupe. She stayed with the troupe until she joined S.1. In high school, she started working with Crane Performers.

In 2015 Azawi joined a band that later worked with Eddy Kenzo whom she would write a song.

Kenzo connected her to Kuseim who was his producer at Big Talent Entertainment.

With Kuseim, they started writing songs until he quit Big Talent to start his studio.

It’s Kuseim who produced the beat Quinamino. Initially, they wanted to sell it and Azawi suggested Swangz Avenue because she wanted Winnie Nwagi to sing it.

But when she met Benon Mugumbya and Julius Kyazee at Swangz, they gave her the option of signing to the label and also encouraged her to sing instead of just writing.

She accepted the offer and the rest is history.
