Azawi's 'Sankofa' listening party: A musical delight

Azawi's upcoming album 'Sankofa,' set to release on October 9, has been a topic of anticipation and intrigue within the music community. Last night, an intimate group of fans were treated to an exclusive preview of the artiste's latest work during a special listening party at Kibo Lounge in Naguru.

The album's title, "Sankofa," which translates to "go back and get it" in Akan, a language spoken in Ghana, carries profound symbolism, urging listeners to reflect on their past experiences to shape a better future. This symbolic approach to storytelling is refreshing, although one might argue that there appears to be a subtle disconnect between this theme of reflection and the thematic essence conveyed through the actual songs in the album.

During the intimate listening session, Azawi shared her personal struggle with writer's block and the creative abyss she found herself in. In her own words, she described the album as a way to reconnect with her past self and find inspiration from her own journey, allowing her to embrace vulnerability and share it openly with her fans.

"I was going through a very difficult time in a creative’s life. I had writer’s block and I was drowning. I needed something to tickle my creative juices, and I turned to my mentors Julius (Kyazze) and Benon (Mugumbya) who advised me to take time and visit my past self, reflect and do the things that Zawedde was, hence the album 'Sankofa'," Azawi expressed, providing a glimpse into the deeply personal motivations behind the album's title and concept.

Guinness Uganda, who sponsored the party, shared their enthusiasm for Azawi's representation of resilience and creativity, an aspect that drove them to choose her as the face of the brand.

"Azawi in Uganda personifies the essence of 'Black Shines Brightest,' representing a young woman who defied all odds with unwavering optimism to carve out a career fueled by creativity and pure passion. We are eager to celebrate her journey," Mutamuliza, the Guinness Uganda brand manager noted.

The album comprises over 14 meticulously curated tracks, promising a harmonious blend of melodies and stories interwoven with finesse. Azawi collaborated with international musicians, composers, and producers for this project, including notable names like Konshens, Sauti Sol, Mike Kayihura, and Elijah Kitaka. The diverse collaborations and production credits emphasise the global appeal of the album.

Among the standout tracks is "Champion from Africa," a heartfelt tribute to her fans and their unwavering support. This song, inspired by the love and motivation she receives from her fans, showcases Azawi's gratitude and the symbiotic relationship between the artist and her audience.

While 'Sankofa' holds promise as a musical journey inviting reflection, it remains to be seen how the theme of introspection will be woven into the fabric of the album's songs. Azawi's vulnerability and openness about her creative struggle make this album a captivating prospect, offering a glimpse into the artiste's growth and evolution in the ever-changing landscape of the music industry.
