China Town Uganda, located in Lugogo, was abruptly shut down on Monday, September 2, following a reported terrorist threat. The inability to manage large crowds added to the concerns, and Ugandan police, alongside military personnel, descended on the area during the evening rush hour.

Despite the closure, eager shoppers had already captured photos of products and prices, showcasing just how affordable the goods were compared to other local retail shops.

Upon reopening, a variety of products – many of them Ugandan-made – were back on the shelves. This comes as part of a government policy requiring 40% of shelf space to be dedicated to locally manufactured goods, an initiative aimed at boosting the domestic economy. While many shoppers have embraced this, local retailers are less enthusiastic.

Some argue that the hypermarket, backed by foreign investment, is threatening their livelihood. They claim that China Town Lugogo’s pricing model, enabled by foreign-owned factories, undercuts local businesses, offering goods at much lower prices, while also benefiting from tax incentives.
