The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, since its inception, has rapidly evolved into East Africa’s most anticipated and scenic marathon. With Kenya leading in registration numbers, over 2,000 Kenyan runners are expected to take part.

The race has gained international recognition, showcasing the growing trend of sports tourism in the region. This year, organisers are anticipating a larger turnout, positioning the marathon as a major sporting event with participants from all over the world.

The marathon will feature a range of competitive races, each taking runners on a journey through the stunning yet challenging terrain of the Rwenzori Mountains.

"We are thrilled by the growth of this event. It not only attracts elite athletes but also adventure seekers and wellness enthusiasts," said Amos Wekesa, CEO of Equator Hikes and the lead organiser of the event.

A Strong Focus on Sustainability

This year’s edition is focused on four key pillars: talent identification and development, healthy living, climate change awareness, and year-round tourism.

The organisers are placing a significant emphasis on environmental sustainability with campaigns such as tree planting, recycling zones, and eco-friendly water stations.

The marathon organisers aim to raise awareness about the climate crisis affecting the region, particularly the alarming rate at which glaciers on the Rwenzori Mountains are melting.

As runners take on the scenic and challenging routes of the Rwenzori’s, they will also champion a greater cause: climate action and sustainability,” Wekesa explained. Through this initiative, the marathon hopes to inspire global action towards preserving the environment.

A Boost for Local Tourism and Business

Over the years, the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon has not only become a highlight of Uganda’s sporting calendar but also a significant driver of tourism in the region. The marathon has brought in travellers from across the globe, boosting local businesses and creating opportunities for growth in the Rwenzori region.

Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Martin Mugarra, who was the guest of honour at the press conference, emphasised the marathon’s role in promoting tourism.

"The marathon has played a crucial role in positioning the Rwenzori region as a key tourist destination. It is one of the most effective ways of showcasing Uganda’s beauty to the world," he said.

However, concerns were raised about the potential impact of the upcoming election season on the marathon.

Amos Wekesa, lead organiser of the event, cautioned that political instability during the election period could harm the marathon’s image and its success. He appealed to politicians to ensure that the country remains peaceful during the period leading up to the event.

"I want to warn you that if the election season disrupts the peace, it could hurt our efforts as the private sector to grow the country. People are coming from over 50 countries. We want assurance that there will be peace," Wekesa urged.

Minister Mugarra responded to these concerns, acknowledging the importance of maintaining a responsible and positive image of Uganda, particularly on social media. He stressed that while Uganda, like any country, faces challenges, these should not overshadow the nation's efforts to promote its positive aspects, especially during the election season.

"We need to communicate responsibly. The election season can be challenging, but we are committed to keeping things peaceful. Uganda will not collapse, and we urge all Ugandans to act with responsibility," he said.

Preparations are already underway as runners from across Uganda and the world gear up for the event. Community training sessions, wellness partnerships, and social media challenges are generating excitement for what promises to be a monumental edition of the marathon.

"If you have not booked your accommodation in Kasese, you might miss out. Consider other nearby towns like Fort Portal and Mbarara," warned Wekesa, highlighting the growing demand for lodging.
