Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has been approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host major continental tournaments, reinforcing Uganda’s role in African football and its investment in sports infrastructure.

The stadium, which opened on June 1, 2024, is now eligible to host qualifiers and final tournaments for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as well as preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

In October 2024, FIFA certified the stadium’s turf, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarding the certification.

The venue was also nominated for a Global Award earlier this year, placing it among recognised sporting facilities worldwide.

Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, credited the achievement to Uganda’s government and sports authorities, including President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo, for their role in improving the country’s football infrastructure.

“This is a step forward for Uganda and African football,” Mulindwa said. “We remain committed to maintaining high standards as we prepare to host these tournaments.”

The CAF approval is expected to benefit Uganda’s football development and tourism sector, positioning Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo as a key venue for regional competitions.
