The Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has strongly condemned a fraudulent scheme involving several MPs who allegedly obtained an invitation for a workshop in Mombasa using his name without his knowledge or consent.
The invitation, sent by the Legislative Centre, invited members of the opposition to attend a workshop on "Inclusive leadership and governance for social equity and development."
The workshop is scheduled to take place from May 18 to 31, 2025, at the Sai Rock Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya.
The MPs in question, including Joyce Bagala, Kakembo Michael, Juliet Kakande, Lumu Richard, and Najjuma Sarah, reportedly used Ssenyonyi’s name to secure the invitation.
According to Ssenyonyi, he was unaware of the invitation until he received it through the Speaker of Parliament. He expressed his outrage at the MPs’ actions, stating that one of the MPs even lobbied for his name to be added to the list after the letter was received.
The letter, issued by the Legislative Centre, was meant for the LOP and his delegation.
However, it controversially included Najjuma Sarah, a member of the ruling NRM party, under the "Opposition delegation."
This raised questions about the authenticity of the invitation and the intentions behind the MPs' actions.
Ssenyonyi shared his concerns on social media, accusing the MPs of fraudulently using his name to secure a trip to Mombasa. He questioned why the MPs would behave in such a manner, calling their actions "fraudulent" and "irresponsible."
The Legislative Centre, a human capital development institution based in Nairobi, sent the invitation as part of its ongoing efforts to promote inclusive leadership and governance.
The workshop is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and strategies to implement inclusive leadership models, with a focus on social equity and national development.
Ssenyonyi has demanded accountability from those involved and stressed that the fraudulent actions of these MPs should not go unchallenged. He also expressed his intention to take further action to address the situation.
