The Ministry of Works and Transport has come under intense scrutiny following the tragic death of Rajiv Ruparelia, the son of renowned Ugandan businessman Sudhir Ruparelia.
The fatal accident, which took place early on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Busabala Flyover traffic lights in Wakiso District, has sparked widespread criticism over the dangerous placement of road construction barriers.
These barriers, erected by contractors working in the area, were not accompanied by proper warning signs, contributing to the crash.
Rajiv, who was driving a Nissan GTR (registration number UAT 638L), was heading from Kajjansi towards Munyonyo when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle after colliding with one of the concrete barriers at the flyover junction.
The vehicle overturned and caught fire, resulting in Rajiv’s death.
Police have confirmed that there was no chance of survival following the crash, with his body being charred beyond recognition.

Public Outcry Over Lack of Warning Signs
Local residents who witnessed the aftermath of the crash have expressed outrage over the poorly marked road construction site.
Many are blaming the Ministry of Works for failing to ensure the safety of motorists.
One resident voiced their frustration, stating, “This is an express highway; how can you place barriers on such a road without any warning to the drivers?”
Another resident, Yasin Kyazze, pointed out that the underpass, where the barriers were placed, lacked proper lighting, making it even more dangerous for drivers, especially those travelling at high speeds.

“If you approach at a high speed, you have no chance of stopping,” Kyazze added, highlighting the frequent accidents at this junction.
Previous Accidents at the Same Spot
This wasn’t the first time that drivers had been affected by the poorly marked barriers.
Just hours before Rajiv’s fatal crash, another vehicle, a Toyota Noah (UNR 586 A), collided with the same barriers and was severely damaged.
Complaints about the junction have been circulating on social media platforms for some time, with many questioning why no action has been taken to improve safety measures at this dangerous spot.
As of the time of this report, the Ministry of Works has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
