The businessman, who also doubled as the head of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for Rukiga District, died in a fatal car accident on Thursday night in the western Ugandan district of Ntungamo.

He was travelling in a car—a Land Cruiser with registration UBF 300Z—when it collided with a halted Fuso truck registered as UAZ 767D on the Mbarara-Kabaale highway.

After surviving the collision with injuries, the driver and two other passengers who survived were sent to the hospital.

The head of KACITA, Thaddeus Musoke, told Pulse Uganda that the business world has lost a clever, dedicated man who was able to strategize and spot chances that others couldn't.

He said that in addition to his achievements, Aponye will be remembered as a man who preferred conversation to protest when a problem arose.

"We are surprised by how abruptly and shockingly accidents claim lives. Aponye was a very distinctive figure in the business world who promoted a distinctive method of handling difficulties through dialogue, where he could plan and spot chances where you might think there weren't any," Nagenda said.

Under the name Aponye Uganda Limited, Nyagamehe held a number of companies with interests in produce, retail stores, transit, and real estate.

The businessman is remembered for having played a part in the Government of Uganda's efforts to distribute food to all Ugandans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He distributed maize among others.
