Museveni said government civil servants especially scientists should get salary increments without the concern of them being paid higher than their seniors.

The president gave the example of himself, who despite occupying the highest office in the country, is still getting paid Shs. 3.6 million as his salary.

Speaking at a recent Ugandan Prisons event, the president revealed that his salary was increased from Shs. 150,000 which he was getting at the start of his tenure.

Between 1986 and 1995 I was getting Shs. 150,000. That was my salary. But I was the president of Uganda and Commander in Chief. Those who doubted it, some of them are not here,” he said.

My authority doesn't depend on the salary.

In 1996, Museveni said, he was “tricked" by MPs” to increase his salary to Shs 3.6million.”

At the time, he said, they had agreed that no government worker should be earning more than this amount.

Yet shortly afterwards, he said, the same government officials went on to limitlessly increase their salaries.

They asked me to increase mine as well but I said ‘No, I don't want your bad luck,’” Museveni revealed.

I still get Shs. 3.6 million and I give 20% to the NRM Secretariat, leaving me with Shs 2.7 million. But I am the president of Uganda. If you are not sure about that you will find out,” he said.
