Bobi Wine has paid tribute to the late veteran journalist Shaka Ssali, mourning his death with a heartfelt message on X.

On Thursday evening, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) posted, "A sad evening. May the soul of this giant, Shaka Ssali, rest in eternal peace."

David Lewis Rubongoya, NUP’s secretary general, also honoured Ssali’s legacy, saying, “Fare thee well, great man, Shaka Ssali. You have played an incredible role in advancing human rights and good governance on the African continent and beyond. Rest well, sir."

Ronald Muhinda, an aide to opposition leader Besigye, wrote, "Kabale Kid Shaka Ssali signs out, goes back to his creator. A straight-talking journalist who fairly, and without bias, gave Africa's opposition and liberation movements a voice on the world stage. Rest well, man."

Shaka Ssali, the renowned host of VOA’s Straight Talk Africa, passed away at the age of 71, just two weeks shy of his 72nd birthday. For more than 20 years, Ssali was the face of Straight Talk Africa, where his interviews with African leaders, analysts, and citizens sparked important conversations on democracy, governance, and development. His unwavering dedication to press freedom and sharp interviewing style earned him respect across Africa and beyond.

Born in Kabale, Uganda, Ssali was deeply passionate about truth and accountability. His work inspired African youth and contributed to shaping conversations around key issues affecting the continent.

His family, friends, and millions of viewers who tuned in weekly to hear his voice are now left in mourning. Shaka Ssali’s legacy in African journalism and discourse will endure for generations.
