The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to multiple emergency calls following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall early this morning in various parts of Kampala.
The intense downpour led to motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water, and extensive property damage.
Sadly, five people have lost their lives due to the flooding. Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, and efforts to identify them are ongoing. Two children, Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), tragically drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.
The children’s mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them inside the house while she went about her work. She was arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, as neighbours reported that this practice had been ongoing.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the deaths and assured the public that rescue teams are still on the ground, assessing the situation and providing assistance.
"We urge the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains to avoid further accidents," Owoyesigyire said.
The police have urged the public to avoid unnecessary movement during downpours, with particular advice for boda boda riders to wait until water levels recede before crossing flooded roads. Residents are also encouraged to secure their homes and ensure the safety of children during extreme weather conditions.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the City Mortuary at Mulago Hospital for post-mortem examination. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The police extend their deepest condolences to the affected families and remind the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season.
