Having recently enhanced his academic qualifications with a master's degree in peace and conflict studies, Nyanzi is optimistic about his prospects for city leadership in the 2026 elections.
Insiders told Pulse that Nyanzi, also the elder brother of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, has been quietly strengthening his support base, gearing up for what could be a significant electoral battle against Lukwago, who has led the city for three consecutive terms.
Nyanzi's confidence is reportedly buoyed by strong backing from both his supporters and NUP's organizational framework.
After celebrating his academic achievement from Makerere University, he recently invited supporters and party officials to his new residence in Kisaasi. During this gathering, it was suggested that Nyanzi should enter the race for Lord Mayor, with attendees expressing optimism about his chances.
A source close to Nyanzi shared, “There is a feel that he stands a real chance this time in the Lord Mayor’s race, from the pulse that he is getting from the ground,” adding that concerns over a repeat of the 2021 election outcomes are diminished due to increased public recognition of Nyanzi's contributions as the party's mobilization leader.
Moreover, it has come to light that Nyanzi plans to launch a substantial online campaign strategy aimed at securing his victory in the upcoming election.
Nyanzi's previous foray into politics during the 2021 Kampala Central parliamentary race ended in a narrow defeat to Muhammad Nsereko, with a margin of just 1023 votes.
His attempt to challenge the election results was unsuccessful, as the court found the evidence insufficient to overturn the election outcome.
