The Uganda Police have launched an operation targeting 15 prominent city pastors suspected of defrauding unsuspecting believers.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke says these individuals allegedly operate under the guise of religious leaders by day but engage in dubious traditional healing practices by night.

Speaking at a weekly press conference, Kituuma revealed that these pastors have been deceiving followers into handing over valuable assets, including houses and land, under the pretext of spiritual interventions.

In many cases, victims only realise they have been conned after suffering significant financial losses.

When confronted, some of these pastors reportedly resort to issuing threats, including death threats, to silence their victims.

“We have identified 15 prominent pastors involved in these fraudulent activities. They are well-respected in their communities because they present themselves as religious figures, but behind closed doors, they exploit the faith of their followers for personal gain,” Kituuma stated.

Ongoing Investigations and Public Caution

While police have already identified the suspects, Kituuma noted that authorities are holding off on publicly naming them as investigations continue.

Intelligence teams are closely monitoring the activities of these individuals to gather concrete evidence before making arrests.

“At this stage, we are still compiling evidence against these suspects. We urge the public to remain cautious and avoid engaging with individuals who demand property, money, or valuables in the name of faith. These fraudsters are taking advantage of people's trust and desperation,” Kituuma warned.

The police have called on the public to report any suspicious religious leaders or pastors engaging in such fraudulent activities.

Authorities have also reassured the public that they are working to bring these individuals to justice and recover stolen assets.
