The trailer, which was shared on Walt Disney Animation Studio's YouTube channel on Tuesday, February 13, gives an impression that it'll be a thrilling series.
The caption on the video reads: "'Iwájú' is an original animated series set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria."
It adds: "The exciting coming-of-age story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds."
In the comment section of the YouTube channel, one commenter said: "As a Nigerian, this is by far the most impressive looking Nigerian animated story I've seen so far. Good or bad, I don't care. I'm really excited. The characters talk and act exactly the way we do. Especially the villian [sic] who sounds like he wants to use someone for ritual."
Another said: "As a person from Africa I love that Disney is making a animation [sic] about Nigerian people, it's nice.💜 Thank you, Disney."
The episodes will be released at once on Disney+ on February 28.
Hamid Ibrahim co-founded Kugali Media with two Nigerian writers (Olufikayo Ziki Adeola Nelson and Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku) with an eye on documenting African stories. The trio is based in London.
Founded in 2017, Kugali Media has already written and produced comic content based on folk stories from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Uganda and Kenya.
Meanwhile, 'Iwájú' was produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson. 'Iwájú' features the voices of Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan and Weruche Opia.
This reporter understands that there will be a screening event to premiere the series in Uganda on March 7.
