Elijah Kitaka has shared his thoughts on the challenges faced by local artists aiming for international success.
Speaking on the The Horion Vibe program on UBC, Kitaka said the Ugandan music industry offers limited opportunities for artists looking to break into the global scene.
According to Kitaka, while Ugandan musicians can become local legends, they often hit a ceiling that prevents them from achieving greater international success.
“Uganda is not the ground that grooms musicians to go international,” Kitaka explained.
“This place has its limits, and no matter how good an artist is locally, the opportunities to move beyond those borders are scarce.”
The Ekyange singer said even those who reach the top of the Ugandan music scene tend to remain confined within the country's boundaries, despite achieving long-lasting success.

The Need to Seek Global Opportunities
Kitaka believes that for Ugandan artists aiming for international stardom, the key to unlocking global recognition lies in leaving the country.
He suggests that once an artist reaches the peak of their career in Uganda, it may be time to seek opportunities elsewhere.
“The truth is, Uganda does not have opportunities that move its singers to greater heights. If you want to go beyond, you need to leave and look for opportunities abroad.”
Once abroad, he said, artists will access better opportunities to break into the global scene.
