Uganda Airlines is edging closer to launching its long-anticipated flights to London.
The airline has recently added London Gatwick to its booking system list of destinations, a move that has sparked excitement among travellers eager for a direct route between Uganda and the UK.
Although flights to London are not yet available for booking, the development suggests that Uganda Airlines is in the final stages of preparation, bringing the much-awaited route closer to reality.
Strategic Expansion After Heathrow Setback
Uganda Airlines has been eyeing flights to London for several years as part of its broader expansion strategy, which includes doubling its fleet and increasing international destinations.
Originally, the airline had secured landing slots at Heathrow Airport after acquiring two Airbus A330-800 Neo aircraft in 2020 and 2021.
However, regulatory hurdles prevented the airline from obtaining clearance from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
After failing to secure the highly sought-after Heathrow slots, Uganda Airlines successfully acquired landing slots at London Gatwick Airport, a major international hub in South London.
The airline's readiness was boosted after it successfully completed ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) safety audits, a crucial step in gaining regulatory approval for long-haul flights.
Final Preparations Underway for London Flights
In June last year, the Uganda High Commission in London confirmed that Uganda Airlines was set to launch direct flights to London in 2024.
A delegation led by CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki travelled to the UK for discussions with aviation authorities, business leaders, and members of the Ugandan diaspora.
These engagements were aimed at finalising operational details and fostering business ties ahead of the launch.
