People who lost their simcards will take at least 5 days to get a new simcard from their respective telecommunication service providers.

The five days process details verification of information of national identity card by National Identification Registration Authority to establish whether their phone number is registered.

"Telecom operators received instructions to enable consumers replace simcards within the short-term as the verification link to NIRA is finalised," Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi said.

Costs

UGX1,000 has been introduced as fee to acquire a replacement form from National Identification Registration Authority offices

Telecommunications companies will also charge about UGX2,000 for simcard replacement

Last month, Uganda Communications Commission issued tough guidelines, including a valid police report, letter from National Identification and Registration Authority, on simcard replacements and purchasing of mobile phones.
