Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Makerere Chapter has submitted an application seeking to impeach Makerere Universitys 84th guild president Papa Were Salim and his speaker.

The group claims that the guild president and his committee failed to protect the rights of the students when they agreed with university management to hike tuition by 15%.

Last week, the students' leadership announced that they had reached a negotiation with university council to reduce the fees from earlier proposed percentages of 49% and 91% on selected programs to 15%.

In a letter seen by Pulse Live Uganda, FDC Makerere Chapter "totally challenge the manner in which the committee executed its exercise more so when it benchmarked in the University of Nairobi which is based in a more stronger economy than ours".

The group reiterates that the committee "didn't meet the house prior to the submission of their report to the council".

It has threatened to use other means to force out the guild president and the speaker out of office if democratic means fail.

The 15% tuition increment across all programs becomes effective from the next academic year 2018/19 for the next 5 years -- but will not affect the continuing students.
