Why Museveni ordered more protection for only his MPs

Kaguta Museveni, Ugandas president since 1986, has ordered for additional security for Members of Parliament.

The 73-year-old president instructed the Minister of Finance to provide money to acquire a fleet of new 4 wheel drive pickup vehicles with open carriage beds.

The open carriage will carry an extra two sharp-shooters from UPDF to protect each of the 453 MPs from security threats, like assassination.

Why now?

His death shocked the nation and angered the head of state. He called the killers "cowards and pigs". Abiriga's death followed a series of kidnaps and murders of women and children countrywide.

In 2017, police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi was assassinated, in the same style as Abiriga, just outside his home.

Sustainable?

Absolutely not, and the president knows it.

In his letter to the Finance Minister, he says government shall do away with "Individualised security which is really a waste of resources, finances and manpower".

No, no, no!

A section of opposition MPs has expressed concern over the president's proposal for more protection.

MP of Maracha County believes that Museveni's proposal is not informed with facts since the budget can't finance priorities of the country.

"This business of securing MPs when the public is not secured, this business of treating people as more Ugandans than others, I will not support it," Buhweju MP said
