United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has made serious changes in its leadership in Uganda amid growing refugee scandals.
The refugee agency has named Mr. Joël Boutroue as the new Representative for UNHCR in Uganda replacing Bornwell Kantande.
Bornwell Kantande will head the UNHCR Regional Service Centre in Nairobi.
Mr. Joël Boutroue’s appointment comes at a time when the country in hit by refugee scandals including embezzlement of money meant for refugees and several sex trafficking and exploitation allegations in some refugee settlements in the country.
In February, government called for quick investigations into the alleged fraud and misuse of funds intended to serve refugees living in Uganda.
Last month, an official from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was arrested for allegedly sodomizing refugee girls in Kitgum.
Uganda is home to over 1.4 million refugees from neighboring countries of South Sudan, DRC, Somalia and Burundi among others.
